100mm Planar Headphone, MOONDROP PARA

by C G on Sep 19, 2023

Planar magnetic headphones have now started making their way into more budget-friendly prices.

Following VENUS, another planar magnetic headphone from MOONDROP, named PARA, comes at US$299! What makes this headphone superior to traditional planar headphones? How's the technology different? Let's find the answer!

In contrast to traditional planar magnetic headphones, PARA adopts an ultra-large 100mm-diameter diaphragm incorporating Full Drive Technology (FDT). The entire vibrating surface of the diaphragm is evenly covered with effective driving circuits and enclosed in a magnetic field. This technology results in low-split vibration far superior to traditional planar magnetic headphones and comparable to that of electrostatics.

The vibrating part of the diaphragm is placed in a uniform planar magnetic field, and effective drive circuits extend over the entire area of the vibrating surface. This exerts a uniform full-surface driving force comparable to that of electrostatic headphones, eliminating split vibrations and delivering a treble performance far superior to that of traditional planar magnetic headphones.

The PARA planar magnetic headphone adopts an array of 36 extra-large N52 neodymium strip magnets to generate a planar magnetic field covering the entire vibrating surface of the diaphragm, optimized by FEA finite element simulation to ensure the uniform and efficient distribution of the magnetic field over the vibrating surface.

In order to greatly improve driveability and ensure that PARA can deliver a superior laid-back natural timbre when powered by standard amplifiers, a new type of high-damping flexible composite material was selected after multiple experiments with various materials. PARA also features redesigned etching of highly elastic pure silver circuits based on a two-dimensional topological structure, greatly eliminating the influence of pure silver circuits on the surface tension of the diaphragm, and further reducing split vibration and improving diaphragm compliance.

In addition to using a variety of materials with a two-dimensional structure design, PARA incorporates Tension Balancing Technology (TBT) to further balance surface stress. PARA offers the double advantage of driveability and high quality, delivering an exceptional listening experience when driven by standard amplifiers or portable HiFi equipment, and an even more refined experience when coupled with high-end devices.

PARA inherits its VENUS predecessor's integrated unit cavity structure, but greatly modifies both structure and materials.

The integrated space-stacked structure of the driver cavity consists of a large magnetic circuit with a uniform magnetic field that completely covers the vibrating area of the extra-large FDT diaphragm. After exhaustive and comprehensive mechanical simulation, the aluminum alloy frame of the VENUS was replaced with an optimized structure of lightweight, high-strength, industrial-grade plastic capable of bearing the loads of the magnetic circuit system and greatly reducing weight.

Thanks to the application of advanced technology and meticulous tuning by MOONDROP’s senior acoustics R&D team, PARA delivers both outstanding acoustic performance and a rewarding listening experience with excellent texture.

Apart from the above configuration, PARA adopts a universal double 3.5mm interchangeable cable design with an inclined angle, allowing users to freely change cables to meet different requirements. If you're new to planar headphone, PARA could be your first choice without breaking the bank!
